Thank you for visiting my page! This blog was created on May 14, 2010, and is primarily an expression of my love of words. Here you’ll find assorted random musings and posts about books, authors, current events, life in general, being Catholic, and writing.

As for me, I’m a regular introvert, imperfectly living out my vocation as a wife and mother. (I fail all the time. Like, spectacularly.) Whenever I have time (and sanity), I attempt to work on some fiction. THE ARCHIVES is posted here, and a couple other stories are in the works.

  12. I stumbled across your blog via The Movie Brothers. Is there any particular genre of literature that you like to write, or do you experiment? I particularly enjoy Science fiction, comedy, or anything about history. I myself write about music.

  20. Hey Maggie — I suppose I’m following the bread crumb trail today, found your site from another site, from another. I think it might have started with Klaus or somewhere. I see you write for YA audiences, do you have a taken on YA in cinema these days? Seems to me like YA and PG13 are terribly muddled in the hands of Hollywood execs., more interested in broad ticket sales than convincing, entertaining stories with believable, interesting characters. Anyway, my writing keeps me in the movie section. Enjoying the looksee. All the best->

    1. Hi! Thanks for visiting! It seems like the entirety of Hollywood/cinema is based on drawing in audiences and making money. Characters aren’t really fleshed out much at all, unless they’re characters from books or comics… and even then, a lot of the effect is lost when it’s translated onto the screen. But you gave me a neat idea for a blog post!

    Quick tip. When you link to another site, like Odyl, for example, use tha ability of WordPress to open the link in a new page. That keeps the visitor ALSO on your site. Good for “business”. ))

        1. I think 12 Angry Men (a play, very short) is a good choice. The conversation the men have is fictional, yet it is also realistic. It might be a good model.

    I’ve enjoyed looking through your blog (not all of it I’m afraid!) but given time….. Anyway, I thought I would take up your kind offer of advice and ask you if you have any advice on how I could encourage more visitors to my blog. It’s non-fictional I’m afraid, perhaps it’s the subject, or perhaps it’s my writing style. Anyway, if you are interested in giving some advice…..it would be very welcome, however candid. I only have 6 followers (5 are my family) and I’ve done 33 posts.

    1. Thanks for visiting my blog, Bruce! I like your blog, especially how you tell anecdotes and stories and how you include pictures. Pictures are very important; they break up the text and keep readers’ attention. I’d recommend keeping blog posts and paragraphs short; if they’re too long, readers can get bored or tempted to skip around. If you have a very long blog post, it might be a good idea to break it into two or three shorter ones. If you want more traffic, you could search on WordPress for blogs about similar topics; there should be a “Reader” tab on your WordPress homepage; click that and you’ll see a search box to the left under the word “Topics”. In that box, you can enter “oncology” or “cancer” and you’ll get other blogs with similar content. Comment on those and read through them and you’ll eventually attract people to your blog. And it always helps to keep posting on a consistent basis: that keeps your blog active in the search engines so people can find it when they use Google or Yahoo.

      1. You say that you like Bruce’s blog and say “Pictures are very important; they…” I couldn’t agree with you more about including pictures, but you don’t say a word about video.
        Video can make reading much less boring since in seconds you can see so much more than text alone.
        The old adage “A picture is worth a thousands words” is true. As an old person, like me and other people in my life, you simply don’t have the time to read many pages to describe a single scene.
        To be a successful writer, you must include video to get ideas quickly. Who wants to read 1, 2 or more pages to describe a scene when with video all it takes is a few seconds.
        I strongly suggest that you keep video in mind while writing. You can and will save a lot of time.

  42. Words do not exist that can describe how much your wisdom, writing and wit mean to me. You bring joy to my boring life and if you gave-up your writing, especially your blog entries, it would have an impact on so many people.   46. I am sorry to say that the image you posted that you think portrays the Western saint Valentine of Rome IS NOT! The image is in fact St Valentin Sventitsky one of the many New Russian Orthodox Martyrs under the Bolsheviks. It is the only icon like it in which our monastery had commissioned many years ago by a local iconographer Gregory Melnick.
